Kolyma eighty-eight butterfly

Kolyma eighty-eight butterfly

Catacore kolyma pasithea

The patterns on the underside of this butterfly’s wings look like two number eights, hence the common name.

Where can you see them? They are found in forests of South America from Columbia down to Peru.

Are they endangered? Unfortunately these beautiful butterflies are killed in vast numbers for their beautiful wings, which are used to produce decorative items for the souvenir trade.
